Annual Fundraising Report

2015 - 2016

Head of School

It was a tremendous 2015-16 school year at Highlands! We dove into our new Highlands 21 Strategic Plan of which some key goals included: launching our STEM program for 4K-8th grade with two new STEM labs, faculty visits to top independent schools in the region, continued efforts in Differentiated Instruction and Project Based Learning, and learning together about South Africa through our Country of Study program. Also thanks to the efforts of Susan Evans, Hampton Stephens and Nancy Riley, we had a wildly successful school auction, raising over $208,000 for Highlands School!

I continue to be amazed by our outstanding faculty as they collectively demonstrate through their teaching and learning a growth focused mindset which is essential for preparing our students for a world that is changing at an exponential rate. Walking through our classrooms, I see evidence of best educational practices such as collaborative learning, experiential learning, a focus on critical thinking and dialogue, and being active participants in a digital as well as global world. Our curriculum and culture are based on characteristics that are as embedded in our mission as they are relevant to our rapidly changing global economy: citizenship, leadership, spirit of innovation and collaboration, intellectual and critical thought. Our programs will continue to be designed around these aspects, and our ongoing success in our annual fundraising indicate that these aspects are important to you as well. Thank you for recognizing what is needed to adequately educate our students for the realities of the 21st century.

Thank you to each and every member of our community – students, parents, teachers, staff, trustees, grandparents, and friends. No single factor can account for the success of our school, but one thing of which I am sure- without the generous spirit of our entire community, Highlands School would not be the school it is today. What a testament to the Highlands Way!

President, Board of Trustees

Sometimes we are running and so determined, it is our impulse to keep looking forward without turning our head and looking at the trail we have left behind; and our progressive nature might risk us losing proper perspective without setting the future against the past. A well-known politician once said “however beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results”. Sardonic, albeit, but what I take away from this statement is the ability to discern between what is nice and what is necessary. A strategy is nice and fluid. Introspect is necessary and revealing.

Well, the 2015-2016 school year was pretty great. Kavita followed up her first full year as Head of School, as she transitioned into her newfound role, with a second year full of enthusiasm, innovation and team building. Launching two STEM labs last summer and integrating them into the entire year’s curriculum, visiting nearly a dozen of the top independent schools in the country to share best practices, supporting the PA to produce a record auction, performing a comprehensive study on school day scheduling and not to mention her continued success in building an unmatched team of teachers, administrators and fellow faculty members. Great leaders always circle themselves with great talent – and she certainly continues to do this.

Like a pile driver, the Board continues to relentlessly pursue the Mission of our school; as our children deserve no less. Many of you may recall, we set out in 2015 to develop a comprehensive school Master Plan through the consultation and guidance of Architecture Works, a local architectural firm. A master plan is a document that lays out a framework within a [school] boundary that encourages development or change to meet the needs of the future. NAIS recommends that a school consider development of one and in 2014 the Board felt like it was time to take a hard look at ours. The committee chair Lenus Perkins saw the process to its completion and the payout was a well-grounded, long-term Highlands School Master Plan reflective of our Mission and our Strategy.

We will continue to look ahead and always reflect on the events of the past in the hopes that it might make us better; so let’s prepare ourselves for yet another great school year. Thank you and congratulations to the entire Highland’s family for taking part in a wonderful year – the Administrators, the Teachers, the Faculty, the Board members and most importantly, you - the Families. Thank you for all that you do and especially for sharing Evalina Spencer’s beliefs and commitment to prepare our children to be productive and responsible - by giving them rigorous academia, creating a lifelong desire to learn and instilling the necessary habits to succeed in life.

Chair, Parent Auxiliary

The 2015-2016 school year was busy, and it was an exciting time to be a part of the Parents Auxiliary. The PA continued to collaborate with the school administration, Board of Trustees, and families in order to build strong ties between all.

There were wonderful events through out the year that brought our families together for community building. Fall Festival, Spring Fling, and Scholastic Book Fair are just to name a few. Parents volunteered their time and energy to volunteer with the PA committees. They put forth amazing efforts to make our merchandise sales and school supply sales successful. We had wonderful parents organizing costume closets and classroom volunteers. As with each year in the past, parents brought their talents to the table to make 2015-2016 a fabulous year.

This year the Parents Auxiliary partnered with the administration on several events. This was a fun way to strengthen the relationship between all. The Country of Study Celebration in March was a collaboration of parent volunteers, students, teachers, and the administration and staff. It was truly a whole school effort. The night was a hit as we celebrated South Africa. The 2015-2016 funds raised by the PA supported a trip to Italy for two teachers for year three.

In addition to the Country of Study, the PA and school brought the Umbadu South African Dancers to perform for the students before Thanksgiving. This was a wonderful experience and had the Spencer Center up and dancing. April brought Steel City Pops for the entire school - another example of the partnership between the PA and school. Our PA Council, which includes officers and Grade Level Representatives, met five times this year to work directly with the Head of School and help support her efforts during the year.

It has been an exciting year for the Parents Auxiliary and Highlands school. It was a pleasure to be a part of this group of parents and work along side the school.

2015-2016 At a Glance

COUNTRY of STUDY | SOUTH AFRICA

As you know, the Country of Study Program began two years ago as a part of our mission for global education and integration. The charge of the program is to visit and explore cultural, historical, geographical and other impactful places throughout the country in order to help lead the school in an in-depth study of the country throughout the school year. This culminates in a school-wide celebration of the country in which classes create special projects and artwork and present them to the community in a museum-like setting. Last year the country of study was South Africa.

Ms. Leffel and Ms. McCool (last year’s travelers) were overwhelmed by this beautiful, complex country. They traveled to Johannesburg where they toured the city, the Lesedi Cultural Village and the Apartheid Museum. From there they went to the Sabi Sands Game Reserve on safari and saw The Big Five along with many other animals. The Big Five were named such because of the difficulty and danger in hunting them. They are the elephant, leopard, lion, rhino and buffalo. The travelers continued throughout the country from Nelspruit to Cape Town and on to Hermanus. Along the way they visited townships, heard local music, toured schools, tried the South African cuisine, interacted with elephants and explored an endangered species center. They were also amazed and inspired by the diverse geography including the bushveld, rocky hills, mountains and coastline as well as the breathtaking views of the night sky and sunsets. But their most meaningful experiences were with the people and getting to know them and their culture. The Highlands’ students studied South Africa all year and did a wonderful job celebrating it during the Country of Study Celebration last March.
